Weekly Message
Recently I was listening to an audiobook with my family. We were traveling to Tennessee to visit family for Thanksgiving. While listening to it I found myself asking the question, “do I really fear God”?
As Christians we have been taught not to fear anything or anyone. However, does that include God too? Exodus 20:20 NKJV says, “And Moses said to the people, “Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.””
At first glance it seems that the writer is contradicting himself. However, closer study of the word ‘fear’ helps us see that to fear or morally revere God is a good thing. Prophesying of Jesus, Isaiah writes that “His delight is in the fear of the Lord,…” (Isaiah 11:3a NKJV).
To fear God is to be in awe of His greatness and goodness. Psalms 19:9a NKJV says that “The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever…” The awe of God cleanses you and helps you to endure anything.
Today choose to live a life of purity. I Peter 1:15-16 NKJV says, “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”” This is a command not a suggestion.
Here’s the good news, that with the command comes the empowerment (grace) to fulfill the command. Remember that it’s not by might or by power but by the Spirit of God (Zech 4:6).
Weekly prayer
God, we pray that the eyes of our understanding be enlightened concerning the fear of The Lord. That the Father of glory may give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him (Eph. 1:17-18). I pray that God completes the good work that He has begun in us (Phil 1:6), in Jesus Name.Jesus, AMEN.
Interaction Question
Based on Exodus 20:20, what is one benefit of the fear The Lord?
When was the last time you asked the Holy Spirit, “do I really fear God”?
3. What can you do to promote this quality at home with your wife and children?

1. A benefit of fearing the Lord is learning obedience in that fear.
I never asked, but now it’s something I must learn to start pondering.
If we have respect for each other, we will learn to have respect for the things of the Lord.
